University students have pitched tents again in Athens' central Syntagma Square protesting soaring housing costs and what they call chronic underfunding of public education, on the eve of a nationwide education rally.
Students, schoolchildren and teachers plan to march from the University of Athens' Propylaea at noon on Wednesday.
The students are demanding lower rents, higher housing allowances for more students, additional dormitory places and urgent renovation of existing dorms.
They also want more state funding for universities and free meals, transport and internet access for all students.
Athens Mayor Haris Doukas visited the protest camp to express support.
"We stand by the student community and the teachers," Mr. Doukas said. "We want decent living conditions, and we must all fight for that."
He also condemned violence, saying it undermines legitimate social demands.
Rents have surged across Greece in recent years, driven in part by short-term tourist rentals, hitting students and young workers hardest.
The government says it is renovating and building dorms and offers housing aid of up to 2,500 euros ($2,900) per student a year.
Some shopkeepers in central Athens have boarded up their windows ahead of Wednesday's march, fearing violence.
