Recently released asset declarations for 2023 have revealed the significant wealth held by many of Greece's political figures, with former Syriza party leader Stefanos Kasselakis reporting a net worth of over €5 million despite no longer holding a parliamentary seat.
Mr. Kasselakis, who stepped down as leader of the main opposition party earlier this year, declared an income of more than $1.7 million for 2023 and holds over €3.5 million in stocks and other investments.
Among current members of parliament, lawyer Pavlos Sarakis, a former Greek Solution MP who is now an independent, reported the highest income at €18.6 million, largely from fees related to the Novartis pharmaceutical case.
Several ministers in the ruling New Democracy government also declared substantial assets.
Niki Kerameos reported bank deposits of over €1.2 million, while Tourism Minister Olga Kefalogianni's deposits exceed €1.25 million.
On the opposition side, Syriza MP Elena Akrita declared bank deposits totaling over €800,000 in various currencies and owns 13 real estate properties.
Dimitris Papadimoulis, a former Syriza MEP, reported a stock portfolio worth nearly €1.5 million and bank deposits of over €1 million.
The current leader of the socialist PASOK party, Nikos Androulakis, reported modest income but holds bank deposits of more than €1 million, mostly in a Belgian bank.
At the other end of the spectrum, the leaders of the far-right NIKI party and the Communist Party reported very limited bank holdings, while independent MP Michail Giavotakis declared zero income for 2023.
