Greek police issued 2,477 fines in a single week to riders of motorcycles and other two-wheeled vehicles for not wearing helmets as part of an intensified national safety campaign, authorities have announced.
The “Zero Tolerance for Not Wearing Helmets” campaign, now in its fifth week, also saw 415 fines issued to passengers.
From July 28 to Aug. 3, officers conducted over 23,500 inspections nationwide.
The highest number of violations was recorded in the wider Athens region of Attica, with 842 fines, followed by popular tourist destinations like the South Aegean islands and Crete.
The crackdown enforces harsher penalties under a new Traffic Code, including a 350-euro fine and a 30-day license suspension for motorcycle drivers who fail to wear a helmet.
Police said the campaign's goal is not just to impose fines but to change public attitudes and promote the helmet as a basic life-saving measure.
