Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has been briefed on the status of a landmark electricity interconnection project with Cyprus, amid a growing dispute over the project's funding and conflicting reports of financial claims.

The meeting at the Maximos Mansion followed a report in a Cypriot newspaper claiming that Greece's Independent Power Transmission Operator (ADMIE) was demanding an immediate payment of €251 million from Cyprus for expenses already incurred on the Great Sea Interconnector project. ADMIE swiftly denied the report, calling the €251 million figure "arbitrary and unsubstantiated."

In a statement, the operator clarified that it is only claiming the agreed-upon first installment of €25 million for 2025.

The €1.9 billion project aims to end Cyprus's energy isolation by linking its grid to Israel and Greece via a 1,208-kilometer subsea cable.

However, progress has been stalled by concerns from Cyprus over the project's cost and the geopolitical risks of conducting surveys in waters contested by Turkey.

Greek officials have stated that Cyprus, as the primary beneficiary, must show its commitment for the project to move forward.
