The Greek Parliament has approved the 2026 state budget, handing Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis a renewed fiscal mandate with 159 votes in favor despite fierce opposition debate over the rising cost of living.
All 156 lawmakers from the ruling New Democracy party supported the bill, joined by three independent deputies: Mr. Konstantinos Floros, Mr. Giorgos Aspiotis, and Mr. Charalampos Katsivardas.
In total, 295 legislators participated in the roll-call vote, with 136 voting against the government's economic roadmap.
While the broader economic plan split the chamber, defense spending secured a commanding cross-party majority.
A total of 216 lawmakers ratified the military budget, underscoring a national consensus on security modernization amid persistent regional tensions and alliance obligations.
The budget for the Presidency of the Republic also passed comfortably with 236 votes in favor.
Mr. Mitsotakis hailed the result as a green light to balance social relief with fiscal discipline. However, opposition parties utilized the multiday debate to attack the government’s handling of inflation, signaling that household economics will remain the central battleground for the administration in the year ahead.
