The Greek Parliament is expected to approve the purchase of a fourth advanced Belharra-class frigate on Friday, with the ruling party and most of the opposition backing the move as a necessary step to modernize the country's navy.
The bill, introduced by Defense Minister Nikos Dendias, has the support of the socialist PASOK and main opposition Syriza parties, among others, ensuring a broad consensus.
The Communist Party (KKE) and smaller left-wing parties have rejected the legislation.
Mr. Dendias praised the opposition's "political bravery" for supporting the government on a key national security issue, stating that Greece faces an "existential threat" and must vigorously defend its sovereignty.
However, the plan is not without its critics.
Syriza's parliamentary leader, Sokratis Famellos, expressed concern over the rising cost of the frigates and what he called limited participation for the Greek defense industry.
The leader of the KKE, Dimitris Koutsoumbas, condemned the purchase as serving the "imperialist plans" of the U.S., NATO, and the E.U. rather than Greece's own national interests.
