Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis held a phone call with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz ahead of two critical international summits, with their conversation centering on developments in the Middle East and broader regional concerns.
The call took place just days before the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) summit in The Hague, scheduled for June 24-25, which will be immediately followed by the European Council meeting in Brussels on June 26-27.
Both leaders discussed coordinated positions on pressing geopolitical issues, as tensions remain high on multiple fronts from the Eastern Mediterranean to the Middle East.
Mr. Mitsotakis is set to depart for The Hague on Tuesday afternoon, where the NATO summit will commence with a leaders' dinner in the evening and continue with official sessions on Wednesday.
The agenda is expected to cover critical topics such as regional security, defense readiness, and alliance unity, particularly in the wake of shifting power dynamics across Europe and the wider Mediterranean.
Later on Wednesday, Mr. Mitsotakis will travel to Brussels to participate in the GAVI Summit, a global initiative focused on vaccine access and immunization efforts.
The Greek prime minister’s presence highlights the importance Athens places on global health diplomacy alongside its more traditional security and economic priorities.
On Thursday morning, Mr. Mitsotakis will attend the European People’s Party summit, followed by the European Council summit. At the latter, European Union leaders are expected to tackle a packed agenda that includes enlargement policy, external relations, and migration.
These back-to-back meetings mark a pivotal week of diplomacy for the Greek leader, as Athens navigates both regional tensions and a changing European political landscape in the aftermath of the recent European Union elections.
