A nationwide safety crackdown by the Greek Coast Guard has uncovered numerous violations at water sports rental businesses, leading to hundreds of fines as authorities step up inspections during the peak tourist season.
Between June and mid-July, the Coast Guard conducted 3,000 inspections and cited roughly one in ten businesses.
Common violations included operating jet skis and other craft without proper safety equipment, unlicensed speedboat drivers, and missing rescue boats.
Inspections of private recreational boats also frequently found missing life jackets, invalid operator licenses, and a lack of required safety certificates.
In total, authorities have issued 265 fines amounting to 80,000 euros.
On a positive note, the Ministry of Shipping and Island Policy reported that 89% of Greek beaches now have lifeguard coverage, one of the highest rates in recent years.
Officials said safety inspections will continue with full intensity throughout the summer.
