The Greek cabinet on Friday approved a sweeping package of reforms aimed at modernizing education, boosting the economy, and streamlining urban planning, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis's office has announced.

Headlining the initiatives is a plan by the Ministry of Education to hire 10,000 permanent teachers for the new school year. Education Minister Sofia Zacharaki also detailed a major push to digitize classrooms, including the installation of 36,000 interactive whiteboards and the distribution of robotics and STEM kits to schools.

In the economic sphere, the government will move to accelerate strategic investments by digitizing business permits and streamlining funding for small and medium-sized enterprises.

The plan, presented by Development Minister Takis Theodorikakos, also includes new protections for Greek products with geographical indications.

In a related move to cut red tape, Environment Minister Stavros Papastavrou introduced a new, unified Spatial and Urban Planning Code to replace more than 170 separate existing laws.

Other key legislation approved includes the establishment of a dedicated office to prepare for Greece’s presidency of the EU Council in 2027, a new law to increase transparency in political advertising, and tougher measures to combat art forgery.
