Acclaimed Greek actor Konstantinos Markoulakis has taken the lead role in a new American feature film about the Aegean refugee crisis, after director Brad Anderson passed on Academy Award nominee John Malkovich in favor of a Greek-speaking cast he believed would bring greater authenticity to the story.
Mr. Markoulakis, 55, plays Stavros, a coast guard officer based on the late real-life hero Kyriakos Papadopoulos, in the production titled I Was a Stranger.
He clinched the role through a formal audition process after Mr. Anderson committed to a multilingual cast despite the commercial complications such a decision typically creates for international distribution.
"The director initially considered an English-speaking cast with Mr. Malkovich," Mr. Markoulakis told iefimerida.gr. "Ultimately, he chose actors who speak the native languages of the characters.
It may complicate the commercial path, but it enhances the honesty of the story."
The production placed extraordinary physical demands on its lead.
Mr. Markoulakis performed all his own stunts, including deep-water rescue sequences, during 16-hour shooting days — a level of commitment that production staff said is rarely seen in American productions outside of stars such as Tom Cruise.
The actor described the experience as "holistic," saying Greek actors are accustomed to working under demanding conditions.
The film's emotional foundation was deepened by the casting of real refugees as extras.
Before cameras rolled, Mr. Anderson organized sessions in which these individuals shared their personal survival accounts — testimony that shaped the performances around them.
Mr. Markoulakis said the film avoids ideological lecturing while remaining "deeply political" in its insistence on shared humanity.
Reflecting on a career that has made him one of the most respected figures in Greek cinema and theater since the 1990s, Mr. Markoulakis said he views age as an asset.
"Growing older is the only alternative to not living," he said, adding that the collaboration with Mr. Anderson has sparked a lasting friendship and opened a new chapter in his international work.
I Was a Stranger does not yet have a confirmed release date.
