Greece's Deputy Prime Minister Kostis Hatzidakis has called on the governing party's youth wing to spearhead its campaign in national elections expected next spring, calling the vote "a battle for Greece."
Mr. Hatzidakis, who is also vice president of the conservative New Democracy party, made the appeal at an anniversary event for ONNED, the party's youth organization.
He said thousands of current and former members of ONNED and DAP, its university student faction, attended.
In a post on Instagram, Mr. Hatzidakis said he urged party members of all generations to "carry the next election battle on their shoulders," and predicted a victory.
His remarks were among the clearest signs yet that the government is preparing for a spring vote.
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis' current term ends in mid-2027.
New Democracy has governed Greece since 2019 and won a second term with an outright majority in 2023. Party officials have stepped up campaign-style events and messaging in recent weeks.
Earlier this week, party secretary Konstantinos Kyranakis said the public mood made him optimistic that New Democracy could again win enough seats to govern alone.
