Greece’s national women's water polo team has won the World Aquatics Championships, defeating Hungary 12-9 in the final to claim the world title for the second time in its history.
The victory marks the team's first world championship in 14 years, with the last win coming in 2011 in Shanghai. Led by a standout performance from goalkeeper Ms. Ioanna Stamatopoulou, the Greek team established an early lead and maintained control throughout the match.
Goals from sisters Vasso Plevritou and Eleftheria Plevritou helped build a commanding 5-1 lead in the second quarter.
Ms. Stamatopoulou made numerous crucial saves and scored a rare goalkeeper goal, while two late goals from Stefania Santa sealed the victory.
On their way to the final, the team, coached by Mr. Haris Pavlidis, defeated Australia in the quarterfinals and the United States in the semifinals.
