A senior lawmaker from Greece's ruling party on Monday defended the government’s strong support for Ukraine by linking it to the “trauma of the Cypriot tragedy,” while also reaffirming Greece’s position that the maritime agreement between Turkey and Libya is illegal.
In an interview with SKAI TV, Tasos Chatzivasileiou, a Member of Parliament for the New Democracy party, said Greece cannot pursue a "policy of double standards" when it comes to the invasion of a sovereign country.
"For us, the non-violation of borders… is the top priority," he said, referencing the 1974 Turkish invasion of Cyprus.
On the issue of the Turkey-Libya memorandum, Mr. Chatzivasileiou said Turkey is trying to give substance to its "Blue Homeland" ideology by approaching figures like the eastern Libyan military leader, Mr. Khalifa Haftar.
He argued that the interest of "global energy giants" in Greece's offshore blocks south of Crete confirms the international community's recognition of Greece's sovereign rights in the area.
