Greece is one of the highest food-wasting countries in the European Union, with an estimated 200 kilograms (440 pounds) of food thrown away per person each year, according to the latest E.U. data.
Across the 27-member bloc, an average of 131 kilograms (289 pounds) of food is wasted per person annually, totaling approximately 58 million tons.
Households are responsible for more than half of all food waste.Only two countries report higher per capita food waste than Greece: Cyprus, at 300 kilograms, and Denmark, at 250 kilograms.
In contrast, several countries, including Slovenia, Croatia, and Spain, waste less than 100 kilograms per person each year.
