Greece's cabinet is set to approve a sixth increase in the minimum wage on Thursday, with Labor Minister Niki Kerameus and Economy Minister Kyriakos Pierrakakis presenting the proposal at a Council of Ministers session, according to government sources.

The new rate, which takes effect April 1, was not disclosed ahead of the announcement but is designed to keep the government on track toward its stated target of lifting the minimum wage to 950 euros per month by 2027.

The increase will apply to both the private sector and, for the first time on an ongoing basis, public sector employees, whose pay is now adjusted in line with minimum wage movements.

Since 2019, when the floor stood at 650 euros, the minimum wage has risen 35.4% to 880 euros-an increase government sources said has outpaced cumulative inflation over the same period, meaning low-wage workers have seen a real gain in purchasing power.

On an annual basis, workers on the minimum wage currently earn 3,220 euros gross more than their counterparts did in 2019-equivalent to five additional monthly salaries at the 2019 rate.

Government sources were keen to highlight that successive increases have not stalled job creation. Unemployment fell to 7.7% in January-its lowest level since 2008 and down 2.1 percentage points from a year earlier.

Total employment exceeded 4.4 million in January, a 16-year high, with more than 563,000 private sector jobs created between 2019 and 2025 according to the ERGANI labor tracking system.

Thursday's announcement forms part of a broader package of income measures that includes cuts to social security contributions totaling 5.4 percentage points, reduced income tax rates for low and middle earners, and a digital work card that helped generate 2.7 million more declared overtime hours in 2025 than the previous year.

The minimum wage rise also automatically lifts unemployment benefits, maternity pay, parental leave allowances and seniority bonuses for longer-serving employees.
