Greece is ready to play an active role in the reconstruction of Gaza and the broader Middle East peace process, Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis has said following the signing of a historic ceasefire agreement.
"We are ready to contribute substantially to the implementation of the agreement, always based on international law and UN Security Council resolutions,” Mr. Gerapetritis said after a meeting in Athens with his Palestinian counterpart, Varsen Aghabekian Shahin.
Ms. Shahin was visiting Athens just a day after the landmark peace summit in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, where an agreement to end the war in Gaza was finalized.
Mr. Gerapetritis said that as a trusted partner to all countries in the region, Greece plans to mobilize its private sector for reconstruction projects to significantly improve living conditions for Palestinians.
He emphasized the need to stabilize Gaza and enable the swift return of the Palestinian Authority to govern the territory.
For her part, Ms. Aghabekian expressed hope for a lasting peace and called on the international community to provide vital support.
"The people of Gaza are devastated," she said, emphasizing that "all countries worldwide must contribute.”
