The Greek government is partnering with the artificial intelligence company OpenAI and the Onassis Foundation to launch a pilot program that will integrate AI tools into public school classrooms.

The initiative was announced at an event where Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis held a virtual discussion with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.

Education Minister Sofia Zacharaki signed a formal memorandum of cooperation on behalf of the government.

The pilot program will roll out in 20 selected public middle schools during the 2025-2026 academic year. It will include teacher training and the development of best practices for using AI safely and ethically in an educational setting.

Mr. Mitsotakis said the goal is to use AI to make teachers more productive by helping them organize lessons and reducing their bureaucratic workload, allowing them to focus more on teaching.

He noted that students are already widely using tools like ChatGPT, and the challenge is to "integrate these tools in ways that enhance learning."

If the pilot is successful, the government plans to expand the program nationwide.
