Greece has already opened or fully renovated 29 museums and cultural sites as part of a state-led expansion drive, with Culture Minister Lina Mendoni announcing on International Museum Day that several more are imminent — including the Mystras palatial complex in the Peloponnese on May 21 and the Museum of Underwater Antiquities in Piraeus.

Ms. Mendoni said the initiative is designed to decentralize tourism and strengthen local economies beyond the country's most visited sites.

The pipeline also includes the Archaeological Museum of Argos, three exhibition spaces at the former royal estate in Tatoi, and new remote installations on the Aegean islands of Chalki and Agathonisi — the latter already familiar to international attention following its role in Greece's border security debates.

Monday's International Museum Day offered free public admission nationwide.

The Thessaloniki Metro Museum — which showcases ancient mosaics and urban relics excavated during the city's subway construction — had opened recently as the flagship of the program.

This year's ICOM theme, "Museums Unite the World," designated Ancient Olympia's archaeological facilities as the 2026 honored institutions.

"The Ministry of Culture has recently invested in creating, upgrading, and reintegrating museums into the country's modern developmental map," Ms. Mendoni said, describing heritage sites as active democratic spaces rather than static repositories — a framing Athens has adopted as it pitches cultural diplomacy as a stabilizing force amid broader regional tensions.
