Greece is facing a critical three-day period of extreme wildfire danger due to a "perfect storm" of fierce winds, drought, and high temperatures, the country's climate crisis minister has warned, placing all emergency services on the "highest alert."
In an urgent appeal to the public, Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, Giannis Kefalogiannis, stressed that even the smallest act of negligence could spark a catastrophic fire.
“There is no room for mistakes or complacency.
It takes just one spark to ignite destruction,” Mr. Kefalogiannis said in a statement.
He called on all citizens to avoid dangerous outdoor activities, such as using machinery that creates sparks, and to remain extremely vigilant.
“Let us not allow the mistake that cannot be undone. No fire, no dangerous work in the countryside, no passivity,” he urged.
The warning comes amid a long and difficult summer fire season for Greece.
