Greece’s late-August heatwave will ease starting Thursday as strong north winds sweep the country, bringing cooler temperatures to eastern and northern regions, though a new warm-up is expected from Sunday as August bows out with high heat.

Wednesday will be the last day of peak heat, with highs of 36–38°C on the mainland and up to 39°C in the south, while islands reach 34–36°C. Skies will be mostly clear, with isolated afternoon showers and thunderstorms over mountainous areas of central and eastern Macedonia.

From Thursday, winds will shift northerly, strengthening to 4–6 Beaufort and reaching 7 locally over the seas.

By Friday, gusts will hit 8 Beaufort in the southeast Aegean and remain strong Saturday over eastern regions.

Temperatures will drop notably in the north and east from Friday onward, while western areas stay warmer.

Weather will remain generally fair, with limited instability over mainland mountains and isolated rain or storms, mainly in Macedonia and the northwest.

From Sunday, temperatures are forecast to climb again, with highs returning to 33–34°C by month’s end and into early September, as the Boreas winds weaken.
