Greek police stopped roughly 20,000 motorcyclists, e-scooter riders and all-terrain vehicle drivers nationwide in the first week of June and issued nearly 2,200 fines for failure to wear crash helmets, authorities have said.
Of those penalized, just under 2,000 were drivers and 167 were passengers.
The breakdown included 624 e-scooter riders, 46 delivery workers, 15 ATV drivers and 13 tricycle operators.
Greater Athens accounted for the largest share of violations, with 908 fines issued. Western Macedonia recorded the fewest, with just seven.
The operation is part of a sustained traffic enforcement campaign that Greek police have been running for nearly a year, following legislation passed by the government that sharply increased fines and penalties for road traffic offences.
The crackdown has targeted a broad range of violations beyond helmet use, reflecting official concern over Greece's road safety record, which — despite a 22% drop in fatalities in 2025 — still ranks among the worst in the European Union at 50 deaths per million inhabitants.
