Greek Ministry of Culture has installed a temporary fence around the ancient Portara monument on the island of Naxos and filed a criminal complaint after a viral incident showed a tourist lifting a stone at the site, officials announced.
In a statement, the ministry said the lightweight fence was an immediate and necessary measure to protect the famous marble gateway, replacing the previous rope barriers.
Authorities emphasized that the new fencing is a short-term solution.
A permanent redesign and new configuration for the entire archaeological site is already being planned, and the temporary fence will be removed upon its completion.
The Cyclades Ephorate of Antiquities has filed a criminal complaint against unknown persons for "inappropriate conduct" at the site.
The ministry's response highlights the ongoing challenge of protecting Greece’s ancient landmarks from the pressures of mass tourism.
