Greek government will extend the steel fence along its land border with Turkey in the Evros region by another five kilometers, the country's citizen protection minister announced during a visit to the area.
Speaking in the Soufli area, Minister for Citizen Protection, Michalis Chrysochoidis, called the fence a “key deterrent project” and said the extension is part of an effort to seal critical gaps along the border.
The announcement comes as authorities reported a significant drop in arrests for illegal entry in the region.
According to official data, 2,518 such arrests were made in the first seven months of 2025, down from 3,421 in the same period last year.
Officials attribute the decline to a combination of the existing fence, an advanced electronic surveillance system, and an increased police presence.
