Greek authorities are escalating a crackdown on illegal beach occupations, responding to thousands of citizen complaints by dispatching inspectors, imposing stiff fines, and preparing to deploy drones to monitor businesses that block public access to the sea.
The government action follows receipt of more than 2,600 complaints in June alone about businesses, such as beach bars and resorts, illegally occupying public sand with unlicensed sunbeds and umbrellas, or preventing free access to the coastline.
The highest number of violations have been reported in popular tourist areas, including the Halkidiki peninsula in the north and the coastal region of Eastern Attica near Athens.
In response, officials are conducting on-site inspections and issuing fines that can reach up to €60,000 for blocking public access.
Authorities have also ordered the demolition of unauthorized structures and the temporary closure of businesses for repeat offenses.
A key part of the government's strategy is the use of new technology.
The "MyCoast" mobile app allows citizens to instantly report violations, while authorities announced that surveillance drones will be used for inspections starting in August.
The crackdown follows a citizen-led "beach towel movement" that gained momentum last summer, protesting the commercialization of Greece's public coastlines.
Officials say the stricter enforcement and heavier penalties have already led to a noticeable improvement this year, but that vigilance is needed as the peak tourist season continues.
