The Greek government has announced stricter enforcement of vehicle bans on the islands of Hydra and Spetses, which hold special protected status.
To curb illegal traffic, a new digital registry of permitted vehicles will be introduced, along with a public complaint hotline to the port authority and police.
Hydra, where nearly all wheeled transport is prohibited, faces daily violations, mostly by visitors, despite existing regulations.
Spetses also restricts cars to residents with permits, but tourists frequently bring vehicles with minimal oversight. A task force will be formed to revise the rules and reduce the number of exemptions.
The measures were agreed upon in a high-level meeting involving several ministries, local mayors, and regional officials, who cited enforcement and oversight gaps as key challenges.
