Greece has introduced a strict legislative amendment this week significantly toughening penalties for illegal firearms possession and use, a move authorities say is designed to curb violence and dismantle organized crime networks.

Citizen Protection Minister Michalis Chrysochoidis announced the measures, emphasizing that the crackdown covers all weapon types, from pistols to combat rifles and heavy artillery.

"Illegal possession, transport, or facilitation of combat rifles... is punishable by imprisonment and fines of 30,000 to 150,000 euros," Mr. Chrysochoidis stated.

A central pillar of the amendment targets the social roots of violence, specifically family and local vendettas.

Prosecutors are now empowered to order the surrender of legal weapons and mandate restraining orders in disputes fueled by "family ties, race, or local factors."

These preventive measures can last up to six months.

The law imposes severe sentences for carrying weapons in sensitive public spaces. Individuals caught with firearms in schools, airports, ports, religious sites, or public transport now face up to eight years in prison and fines ranging from €20,000 to €100,000.

Additionally, "unnecessary shootings" and the illegal use of explosives will carry a minimum two-year prison sentence and fines up to €50,000.

Business owners, such as those running event venues, face jail time if they fail to report such incidents to police.

Addressing modern threats, the amendment criminalizes online incitement to procure illegal arms.

Offenses committed for profit or online carry sentences of up to eight years. However, the bill includes a window for individuals to voluntarily surrender illegal weapons to avoid criminal liability.

The legislative overhaul follows a recent surge in violent incidents, including a deadly shootout in Crete, which prompted the government to close legal loopholes and enforce a zero-tolerance policy on gun crime.
