The Greek government is launching a new social housing program that will convert inactive military camps and other public properties into affordable rental homes, a minister has announced.
The "Social Leasing" initiative will use a public-private partnership model, said Social Cohesion and Family Minister Domna Michailidou.
Under the plan, the government will provide unused land or buildings to private developers, who will finance and construct the housing at no cost to the state budget.
The first properties to be developed will be former military camps. In an arrangement with the Ministry of National Defense, 25% of the new homes will be reserved for military personnel, while the remaining 75% will be offered as social housing to vulnerable populations.
"This approach increases the supply of quality, affordable housing with rents significantly below market rates," Ms. Michailidou said.
The program is part of a new Social Contribution bill set for debate in Parliament on Wednesday and aims to address Greece's housing shortage.
