Greek dancer Naima Gerasopoulou and her Argentine partner, Lucas Gauto, has made history by winning the "Tango de Pista" category at the 2026 World Tango Championship, marking Greece's first-ever world title in the prestigious competition.
The victory in the Argentine capital cements a major milestone for the duo.
Unlike the theatrical Stage Tango, which incorporates rehearsed acrobatics, Tango de Pista (Salon Tango) strictly mirrors the authentic, improvisational style of traditional social dances, known as milongas.
Under stringent rules, competitors must maintain a continuous, unbroken embrace, navigate the floor in a counter-clockwise flow, and keep their feet grounded without relying on pre-planned choreography.
Ms. Gerasopoulou and Mr. Gauto captivated the judges, outshining the globe’s elite couples to claim the coveted crown.
Their triumph reflects a long-standing creative partnership; Ms. Gerasopoulou and Mr. Gauto have danced together since 2015 and previously secured a fourth-place finish at the 2019 world championship in Buenos Aires.
Originally trained in classical ballet and rhythmic gymnastics, Ms. Gerasopoulou discovered Argentine tango later in her youth and rapidly ascended the competitive ranks, winning the Mediterranean and Eastern Tango Acropolis championship in 2014.
Today, Ms. Gerasopoulou is a driving force in her home country's dance community, sharing her world-class expertise as a principal instructor at the Academia del Tango in Athens.
