Greece is pivoting from mass summer tourism toward a sustainable, year-round model after recording a third consecutive record-breaking year in 2025, with revenue rising 10 percent over 2024 — a rate that significantly outpaced growth in raw visitor numbers, Tourism Minister Olga Kefalogianni has announced.

Speaking via recorded message at an investment conference in Thessaloniki, Mrs. Kefalogianni said early 2026 data shows the upward trend continuing despite global geopolitical uncertainty. She warned, however, that planning based solely on visitor counts is no longer viable given intensifying international competition and the accelerating impact of climate change on traditional beach destinations.

The ministry's strategy centers on spreading tourism beyond the peak summer months and the country's most overcrowded islands, with Central Macedonia and Thessaloniki designated as priority zones for the transition.

The region is receiving targeted infrastructure investment in marinas, ski resorts and coastal accessibility, alongside a new national initiative promoting mountain tourism throughout the year.

The push is underpinned by recent infrastructure completions, including the Thessaloniki Metro and upgrades to Macedonia International Airport, which recorded a 10 percent rise in international passenger traffic.

Mrs. Kefalogianni said the ministry is expanding airline and tour operator partnerships to lock in permanent air connectivity to regional destinations that have historically been bypassed by mass tourism flows.

The strategic shift reflects a broader recognition in Athens that Greece's tourism success has become a double-edged sword — generating record revenues while straining infrastructure and communities in oversubscribed hotspots such as Santorini and Mykonos.
