Greece's national weather service issued an emergency warning for strong storms across much of the country from Tuesday through Wednesday, with local hail likely and northeasterly winds reaching 8 to 9 Beaufort in the Aegean.
On Tuesday, heavy rain and thunderstorms are forecast from the morning in the Ionian islands of Lefkada, Kefalonia and Zakynthos, western mainland Greece and the western Peloponnese, easing late in the afternoon. Halkidiki will see storms from midday until late at night. The Sporades, Magnesia on the eastern coast and Evia will be hit from the afternoon, with intense, prolonged rain. Brief storms are possible in the northeastern Peloponnese and eastern mainland, including Attica, late in the day and into the night. The Dodecanese and Crete, mainly Chania and Rethymno, follow late Tuesday.
On Wednesday, the Sporades, Magnesia and Evia stay under heavy rain until late afternoon. The Dodecanese clear by afternoon, and western Crete by late night.
Very strong northeasterly winds begin in the northern Aegean on Tuesday evening, spreading to the central Aegean through late Wednesday. Temperatures fall to 16 to 18 degrees Celsius in the central and northern mainland.
The warning follows a week of storms and flooding in Crete and comes after days of unsettled weather elsewhere.
Authorities urge residents in affected areas to avoid crossing streams and to secure loose objects.
