Greek coast guard have rescued 242 migrants from six unseaworthy vessels south of Crete in a single afternoon alone, highlighting an aggressive surge in human smuggling operations launching from eastern Libya.

The Hellenic Coast Guard intercepted the coordinated flotilla across five separate operations within a matter of hours on Thursday.

Authorities transferred 139 migrants to the port of Kaloi Limenes, 65 to Agia Galini, and 38 to Palaiochora.

Official maritime data shows a 50% month-over-month spike in migrant boats successfully landing on Crete and the remote southern islet of Gavdos, pushing cumulative arrivals for the first five months of 2026 up 23% compared to the same period last year.

In response to the escalating humanitarian and security pressure along the eastern Mediterranean corridor, the Greek government confirmed it will finalize the strategic transfer of three refurbished naval patrol vessels to eastern Libya’s regional coast guard later this month. The deployment aims to directly intercept smuggling rings operating out of Tobruk before vessels reach international waters.

The policy shift coincides with a stern legislative warning from Migration and Asylum Minister Thanos Plevris, who announced that Greece is prepared to implement emergency border measures—including the temporary suspension of processing new asylum applications—if single-day arrivals mirror the massive 600-person spikes recorded late last week.

Mr. Plevris said the administration will adopt a zero-tolerance policy toward the network operators fueling the influx, which has already pushed total irregular crossings past 10,000 this year.
