Greece's Environment and Energy Minister Stavros Papastavrou has met with Azerbaijan's Energy Minister Parviz Shahbazov in Athens, focused on deepening energy cooperation between the two countries, with particular emphasis on gas supply security and diversification of sources and routes through the Southern Gas Corridor.
Mr. Papastavrou highlighted Greece's growing role as a regional energy hub, pointing to electrical interconnection projects including the GSI link with Cyprus and Israel and GREGY with Egypt, while underscoring the strategic importance of the Vertical Corridor in strengthening energy security and supply diversification.
The two ministers also discussed cooperation prospects in renewable energy and the clean energy transition, including knowledge-sharing and new areas of collaboration.
Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to expanding bilateral trade and economic ties based on mutual trust and shared interests, noting significant potential to diversify the composition of trade between the two countries.
The meeting included Azerbaijan's Ambassador to Greece Arif Mammadov, Deputy Economy Minister Anar Akhundov, and Renewable Energy Agency Director Javid Abdullayev. Representing Greece were Energy and Mineral Resources Secretary General Despoina Paliarouta, Greece's Ambassador to Azerbaijan Maria Papakonstantinou, and TAP's Greece Country Representative Ioannis Maris.
