Greek authorities arrested have arrested 20 people and levied more than €55,000 in fines in just the first five days of July for negligently igniting wildfires-a surge that accounts for more than one in ten of all such arrests recorded since January, as extreme summer conditions push the country to the edge.
The Hellenic Fire Corps said the wave of arrests under flagrant procedure represents 12.2% of the 164 total apprehensions this year-a figure that underlines the intensity of human carelessness in a season already scarred by nearly 100 fires in a single weekend.
The offences include the use of agricultural machinery, metal-cutting angle grinders and the illegal burning of crop residue in direct violation of fire season regulations.
In one prominent case in Atalanti, central Greece, sparks from a combine harvester ignited a rapidly spreading forest fire.
In Oraiokastro, a northern suburb of Thessaloniki, a severe blaze on the evening of 4 July destroyed local businesses and caused significant property damage.
Specialist arson investigators dispatched from Athens moved fast, arresting a 76-year-old man and charging him with starting the fire through negligent vehicle use.
Further arrests followed blazes in Halkidiki, Trikala, Goumenissa, Grevena and Kilkis. The 20 suspects face criminal prosecution alongside administrative penalties totalling €55,005.
Fire officials issued a blunt warning: zero tolerance for arson of any kind, intentional or accidental.
With bone-dry vegetation, soaring temperatures and strong localised winds creating tinderbox conditions, authorities said even a momentary lapse in judgement can trigger catastrophe-and that stringent patrols and immediate arrests will continue.
