Greece has approved more than 37,000 applications for its national green heating upgrade program, unlocking over €125 million in state subsidies to help households replace outdated heating systems and water heaters with energy-efficient alternatives.
The Ministry of Environment and Energy published the second and third final approval lists for the "Change Heating System and Water Heater" initiative this week, marking a significant advance in Greece's domestic energy transition push.
More than 1,700 of the newly approved beneficiaries belong to economically vulnerable groups, officials said.
The program provides state-funded vouchers redeemable against certified suppliers for the purchase of modern, eco-friendly heating and hot water systems, designed to reduce both household carbon emissions and energy bills.
Approved applicants must verify their status through the program's digital platform, select equipment from the official state-certified supplier registry and formally commit their vouchers by May 30, 2026. The final deadline to complete purchases is June 25, 2026.
The subsidy program forms part of Greece's broader effort to accelerate the decarbonization of its residential energy sector, where outdated oil and electric heating systems remain widespread.
Greece has set ambitious targets for reducing household emissions under EU climate obligations, and demand-side incentive programs have become a central tool for driving uptake of heat pumps, solar water heaters and high-efficiency climate control systems among homeowners who might otherwise lack the capital for upfront investment.
