Greece's steadfast commitment to implementing the electricity interconnection between Greece and Cyprus was reiterated by Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis in a television interview with Oikonomikos Tachydromos.
He stressed, however, that economic viability is a prerequisite for the project and that the Greek government's aim is to clarify this. Gerapetritis stated that the European Public Prosecutor's Office investigation does not concern the current management but the previous management prior to the implementing body.
Regarding the reactions that have arisen, Gerapetritis stressed that the project is European, with other EU countries (France and Italy) also participating, protected by international law, and that Greece's position is that there should be no interference. He also stressed that the Greece–Cyprus electricity interconnection project will not be halted due to Turkey’s objections.
Referring to the incident with the Turkish fishermen, Gerapetritis was asked if it was a sign of a return to tension, which he rejected, stressing that, as it turned out, the incident took place in international waters.
Regarding the Palestinian issue, he stressed that the government's position over the last two years has been that there should be room for peace and a cessation of hostilities so that diplomacy and the unhindered flow of humanitarian aid can take place.
