Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis, in his intervention in the Security Council debate on Syria, referred to the historic change that took place in Syria with the fall of the previous regime.
He said it was a "seismic" transformation that rekindled hope for the Syrian people, adding that "we must keep this flame of hope alive despite the challenges that can extinguish it." Gerapetris stressed that Syria is facing a historic opportunity to achieve progress and play a role of stability in the region.
He referred to the traditional friendship between Greece and Syria, as well as his visit to Damascus in February. He also expressed Greece's willingness to contribute further to the reconstruction of Syria and to preserve its rich ethno-religious diversity. He also outlined three main pillars of intervention concerning inclusive political transition, the need for accountability and transitional justice, and addressing the economic and humanitarian crisis.
