Greek authorities are sending dozens of reinforcements to the island of Kythera to bolster efforts against a large wildfire, as strong winds of up to 9 Beaufort are threatening to reignite the blaze that has been burning since Saturday.
The Fire Service says that while the fire in the Pitsinades area currently has no active front, the risk of flare-ups remains extremely high due to the persistent gale-force winds.
To support the crews already on the island, 31 additional firefighters, including two elite forest commando units (E.MO.D.E.), and nine vehicles were being transported by ferry to Kythera on Tuesday morning.
They will join the 67 firefighters already on site.
On Monday, nine planes and three helicopters were used to douse the flames. A special unit has also been dispatched to the island to investigate the cause of the fire
