The average maximum daily temperatures in Greece in June were extremely high compared to the 2010–2019 average for the month in Greece.
According to the network of 53 meteorological stations of meteo.gr of the National Observatory of Athens (NOA), June 2024 was marked by several days with higher positive temperature deviations than usual, resulting in the warmest June since 2010 across Greece, by far warmer than the second warmest June (2012).
The largest deviations were recorded in Central Greece and Peloponnese, where the average monthly values were up to 4.8°C above the normal seasonal levels. In all geographical regions of Greece, June 2024 was the warmest since 2010, with average monthly values almost 2-3°C above June 2012.
The highest temperature rises occurred in Greece in the first half of the month, particularly in Central Greece, the Peloponnese, and Crete between June 10 and 13, with temperatures reaching 10–12°C above the normal seasonal levels (44.5°C in Voukolies near Chania on Crete on June 13).
Additionally, significant absolute maximum temperature records were set at eleven stations in the network of automatic weather stations of the National Observatory of Athens (meteo.gr), which have been operational since before 2014.
In Athens, the average monthly deviation of the maximum temperature was +4.0°C, with 29 out of the 30 days of the month being warmer than normal for the season. In Thessaloniki, 28 days of the month were warmer than the average for the period 2010–2019, with the average maximum temperature for the month being 2.6°C above normal levels. In 70% of the weather stations, at least 29 out of the 30 days of the month were warmer than normal.
