Former Greek minister Nikos Nikolopoulos claims a legal team representing victims of the Tempe rail disaster has petitioned Russian President Vladimir Putin for satellite data, seeking proof of illicit cargo on the trains involved in the deadly 2023 collision.
Speaking to the news outlet militaire.gr, Mr. Nikolopoulos asserted that a formal request was forwarded to the Kremlin to determine "what, when and if anything was loaded" before the crash.
He suggested—without providing evidence—that "surprises are coming" regarding the transport of undeclared hazardous materials, such as solvents or hydrocarbons.
Mr. Nikolopoulos added that the initiative hopes to leverage reporting from Moscow-based Greek journalists, specifically naming Open TV correspondent Thanasis Avgerinos.
Official reaction remains muted.
Greek authorities have not confirmed the outreach, and there has been no public response from Moscow.
While the judicial investigation has focused largely on systemic signaling and safety failures, unproven theories regarding explosive cargo continue to fuel public anger nearly three years after the tragedy that claimed 57 lives.
