The European Commission has removed Greece from its macroeconomic imbalances surveillance list, formally closing a chapter of post-crisis economic oversight and aligning Greece's status with standard Eurozone monitoring.

It is a milestone that comes weeks after Athens prepaid €6.9 billion in bailout debt to drop below Italy in the eurozone debt rankings.

Rural Development Minister Margaritis Schinas, a former European Commission Vice-President, welcomed the decision on social media.

"Today's official exit from surveillance is a vindication for the sacrifices of the Greek people and for European Greece," Mr. Schinas wrote, recalling the depth of the sovereign debt crisis when Greece's continued Eurozone membership was in doubt.

The removal from the imbalances list marks a further step in a sequence of economic rehabilitation milestones Greece has achieved in 2026, including the debt prepayment, investment-grade credit ratings and a debt-to-GDP ratio now below Italy's for the first time.
