The union of workers on The Ellinikon Project on Friday called for abstention from working on Saturday and Sunday and a 24-hour strike on Monday to protest labor accidents at the massive site along the coast and demand more safety measures.

The union called for workers to show up at 10:00 on Monday at the TERNA work site at the Casino and at 12:00 at the union's meeting with their employer, at Lamda's offices.

Referring to an accident on the same day of their announcement, they said that at the Casino site three workers were crushed by scaffolding and injured, one of them very seriously. "This is another of the many 'accidents' that have happened at the project that confirms workplaces have become modern sweatshops. Substantial health and security measures are seen as costly by the employer, who does not hesitate to risk our lives. In this particular accident, and to accelerate work, not only were needed security measures not observed, but an entire scaffold was moved by crane to be set up elsewhere. At the same time, the company representatives 'disappeared' when police came to the project," the union said.
