An Athens prosecutor pressed charges on Sunday against an Egyptian national, 34, who was arrested by a police antiterrorist unit on New Year's Day after taking his former girlfriend hostage in her apartment and threatening to blow up her building.

According to the file, the man charged into the apartment of his former female partner, a Bulgarian national, in the Agios Panteleimonas district of central Athens on Saturday (New Year's Day) and held her hostage for three hours, threatening to blow up the apartment building with a gas canister. Police arrested him the same night and confiscated the gas canister.

The prosecutor filed a criminal charge for kidnapping and five misdemeanor charges for possession of explosives, endangering others, using threats, bearing arms and exercising violence against official staff. The Egyptian was given a date to appear before an investigating magistrate.
