The European Central Bank has invited Eurozone citizens to help choose the future look of euro banknotes, opening a public vote on designs for bills ranging from 5 to 200 euros.
The online consultation, which runs until Sept. 21, features 10 shortlisted proposals unveiled by the ECB in July. The designs are divided into two main themes. The first, "European Culture," honors iconic historical figures such as opera singer Maria Callas, composer Ludwig van Beethoven, and writer Miguel de Cervantes.
For Greece, the voting holds a dual interest. Not only is Mrs. Callas featured on the proposed 5-euro note, but one of the final proposals, known as Design E, was created by Greek graphic designer Myrsini Vardopoulou. Mrs. Vardopoulou's concept emerged from a pan-European competition that initially drew more than 1,200 participants.
The second design theme focuses on nature, utilizing rivers and birds to symbolize freedom, unity, and humanity's connection to the environment.
Alongside the public survey, an independent polling company will conduct a separate study using a representative sample of Eurozone citizens. The ECB's Governing Council will consider both surveys, alongside expert technical assessments, before making a final design decision toward the end of the year. The central bank has committed to publishing a full report on the survey findings to ensure transparency.
"Euro banknotes are more than just a means of payment; they are one of the most tangible expressions of Europe," ECB President Christine Lagarde said. Mrs. Lagarde added that the new designs will strengthen a shared European identity.
