With Orthodox Easter nearing, Greece’s government is set to launch a new programme offering economic relief to families for the holiday.

Dubbed the “Godparent’s Basket,” the  initiative will run through May 4, containing prices for a rash of products godparents and parents traditionally purchase during Easter.

These include Easter candles, toys, board games, musical toys, and chocolate eggs.

Officials say the initiative will be coupled with another cost-cutting bid, containing prices for Easter staples, including lamb, goat, tsoureki (a sweet bread), and chocolate eggs.

“We are firmly supporting households to ensure that every family table is abundantly supplied with essential goods at the most affordable prices,” Minister of Development Kostas Skreka. “Initiatives like these  not only provide financial relief for buyers but also stimulate competition among food retailers, benefiting consumers.”

“The ‘Godparent’s Basket’ is our way of helping godparents and parents purchase quality toys at reasonable prices, bringing joy to children during the holidays.”

The initiatives are part of a broader effort by the Greek government to tackle rising costs of living for families across the country, also supporting the local economy during one of the most significant holidays here.
