East Attica fire raging, additional firefighters dispatched to fight it; focus on Thymari and Triantafyllia

The fire that broke out in East Attica midday was still raging out of control on Friday night.

The main problem as of this writing is north of the Thymari and Triantafyllia settlements, the Fire Department said, while additional firefighters have been added to fight the multiple fronts in Maliasteka, Dimolaki and Harvalo. A total of 264 firefighters are on site, with 10 forest firefighter units on foot, 79 fire engines and a lot of volunteers and their cars. The mobile operations center 'Olympos' is coordinating efforts, while before nightfall a total of 13 aircraft and 15 helicopters, one of which is coordinating by air, were also helping. In addition, Attica Region has provided large earthmoving machinery and water trucks.

The fire started at 14:00 at low brush in Manoutso of Keratea and moved fast due to gale-force winds through farms and forestland and settlements. It raged out of control and claimed the life of an elderly man as well as destroyed homes. According to the Fire Department, the man's charred body was found inside a brick structure near the original location of the fire in Togani of Keratea. He was 76 years old, while Civil Protection information based on neighbors said he lived by himself and was not in contact with his relatives.

Evacuations

At the same time, Greek police said they had carried out 124 rescues of citizens, of whom 35 were from a retirement home in Palea Fokea. According to the Fire Department, a large force of police officers is in the area to help residents evacuate and to regulate traffic. Earlier information said there were at least 136 police officers with 63 vehicles in the area to help. Additional help is being provided by motorcycle police Dias who were expected to arrive in the area to help wherever necessary.

The Coast Guard has provided 3 inflatables near the shoreline of Palea Fokea in case evacuation is necessary, while the emergency medical service EKAV is also at hand with 12 ambulances (of which two are mobile medical units) and 2 motorcycles for first aid. At this time, EKAV rescuers and doctors have evacuated the retirement home 'I Argo', transferring 7 elderly residents to a hotel in Anavyssos for safe temporary housing. At the same time, other elderly people have been evacuated to the 'Pammakaristos' Hospital (9 persons), to the Health Center at Kalyvia (1 person) , and to the General Hospital of 'Asklipieion Voulas' (also 1).

Several messages through the 112 emergency number were sent by Civil Protection in the day to residents of several settlements in the area for evacuation further south.

So far, evacuations have occurred in the settlements of (Drossia, Harvalo Kerateas, Maliasteka, Aghiasma, Dimolaki, Sinterina, ATE (Agricultural Bank), Palea Fokea, Legrena, Harakas, Triantafyllia, Thymari, Katafygi, Feriza and Olympos.

Meanwhile, traffic police has shut down traffic on the rural Keratea-Anavyssos road because of the fire, and other traffic changes have been introduced as the fire spreads.
