Counter-terrorism investigators have made a significant breakthrough in the hunt for the perpetrators of last week's deadly Thessaloniki firebombings, seizing a suspect moped and uncovering potential DNA evidence from the improvised devices used in the attack.
Police sources cited by OPEN television confirmed that the Hellenic Police Anti-Terrorism Division has recovered a low-displacement moped believed to have been used by the attackers during Wednesday's pre-dawn strikes.
Officers are analysing the vehicle's registration records and trawling surveillance footage to trace its movements through the targeted neighbourhoods in the days before the bombings.
Forensic teams are also examining insulation tape recovered from unexploded components of incendiary devices planted at the homes of New Democracy officials Zisis Ioakimovic and Savvas Anastasiadis, working to extract fingerprints or DNA profiles from the adhesive material.
The coordinated triple attack — three blasts within 17 minutes — sparked a catastrophic fire at the home of politician Afroditi Nestora, killing her elderly mother Vagia, and hospitalising four others including her husband Panagiotis.
Security footage has given detectives a clear image of one unmasked, unhelmeted suspect, believed to belong to a cell of younger operatives recently recruited by fugitive extremist handlers operating from outside the country.
Citizen Protection Minister Michalis Chrysochoidis pushed back against fears of a domestic militant resurgence.
"There is no phenomenon of neo-terrorism in Greece," he said, vowing a bulletproof case file would be delivered to the judiciary to ensure maximum sentences.
