Greek Defense Minister Nikos Dendias has met with U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth at the Pentagon, advancing a strategic overhaul of Greece’s military centered on the acquisition of F-35 stealth fighters.
Mr. Dendias briefed Mr. Hegseth on “Agenda 2030,” an ambitious reform plan designed to modernize the Greek armed forces. Discussions focused on deepening military cooperation amid persistent instability in the Eastern Mediterranean and complex relations with neighboring Turkey.
Following the primary session, Mr. Dendias met with Under Secretary of Defense for Policy Elbridge Colby to discuss the practical implementation of bilateral defense pacts, specifically the integration of the F-35 jets.
The advanced aircraft are central to Athens' strategy to maintain air superiority in the region.
“We discussed the deepening of our strategic cooperation,” Mr. Dendias said, noting that he extended a formal invitation for Mr. Hegseth to visit Greece to further strengthen the alliance.
The high-level talks come as NATO members ramp up defense capabilities in response to the war in Ukraine and volatility in the Middle East.
There was no immediate readout from the Pentagon regarding Mr. Hegseth’s potential travel plans.
