Greek Defense Minister Nikos Dendias on Friday stressed the need for a holistic approach to national defense and deterrence, unveiling key pillars of the government’s long-term modernization strategy during a ceremony honoring Saint George, patron saint of the Hellenic Army.
Speaking at the Athens Concert Hall, Mr. Dendias outlined "Agenda 2030", a sweeping defense reform program that he described as a “comprehensive vision of deterrence, technological modernization, and economic development.”
Representing Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis at the event, Mr. Dendias emphasized that the agenda is not a simple list of priorities but a structural roadmap aimed at transforming Greece’s armed forces.
“Defense requires long-term and thorough planning,” Mr. Dendias said. “Greece does not enjoy the luxury of geographic calm like Luxembourg.
It lies at a crossroads of instability, geopolitical shifts, and unpredictable conflict.”
He said Agenda 2030 is already being implemented through the new Force Structure Plan and Long-Term Defense Procurement Program approved by the Government Council for Foreign Affairs and Defense (KYSEA), covering Greece’s strategic defense choices for the next 20 years.
Highlighting transparency, Mr. Dendias announced that all defense programs exceeding €10 million will be subject to review by Parliament’s defense procurement subcommittee, whose expansion he will request next week.
Among the military advancements underway are anti-drone systems like "Centaur", artillery upgrades, and the "Modern Fighter" program to enhance individual soldier capabilities.
Mr. Dendias also referenced the symbolic importance of Saint George, calling him “a central figure in religious and folk tradition” and honoring his role as the spiritual protector of the Greek Army since 1953.
