An emergency alert has been sent to residents of the Ionian Islands and western Greece warning of heavy rain and dangerous storms forecast to hit the region over the next 48 hours.
The alert, sent via the national 112 emergency number, urged citizens to "exercise caution when traveling" and to follow instructions from authorities.
In response to the severe weather bulletin from the Hellenic National Meteorological Service, officials on the island of Zakynthos announced that all schools would be closed on Thursday.
Mayor Giorgos Stasinopoulos said the island is expecting heavy rain, thunderstorms, and hail.
The storm has already caused problems in the region.
In northern Corfu, the fire service reported it had to rescue a British family whose car became stuck in mud on a steep rural road amid intense rainfall.
