A 54-year-old Cretan man has been charged Wednesday with premeditated murder after allegedly ambushing and shooting dead a 21-year-old he held responsible for his teenage son's death in a traffic accident nearly two years ago, in a killing that authorities fear could trigger a violent vendetta.
The suspect, who surrendered to police shortly after the attack, was charged with murder committed in a calm frame of mind — the most serious classification under Greek law — as well as firearms violations. His wife, who was allegedly present during the shooting, faces related charges.
The victim had been driving a car in 2023 when it crashed into a lamp-post, fatally injuring the suspect's 17-year-old son, who died after nearly three weeks in hospital. The two young men had reportedly been friends.
The father never forgave him.
Authorities had already imposed a restraining order on the suspect, barring him from approaching the victim within 100 meters or contacting him by phone or message.
Reports indicate he had attempted to kill the young man at least twice before Tuesday's attack.
The suspect is being held under tight security as police fear retaliation from the victim's family and associates. In parts of Crete, blood feuds rooted in codes of honor remain a persistent social reality, and investigators are taking the threat seriously.
Defense lawyer Giorgos Kokosalis appealed for calm. "We want this circle of blood to close here," Mr. Kokosalis said. "He never managed to get over his son's unexpected death. And with his son, he himself died."
The victim's funeral is set for Thursday.
